I was checking out my visitor’s Entrecards as I ran into Leon who runs “My Thoughts On…Stuff”. He had just checked his blog’s readability. According to his post he was rather surprised that his blog’s reading level “only” is Elementary School.
Then the lightning hit me - Is The Beta News too easy to read? Are my writing juvenile too? And is that good or bad?
I think one of the “advantages” of not natively talking English, is that I only semioccasionally use elongated or ostentatious words. Nevertheless I decided to check the readability of The Beta News just to make sure.
I was a bit relieved to see that my reading level is Junior High School. So what can I use this info to?
Well out of sheer curiosity I decided to check a few of the blogs I read everyday. I was pretty surprised by some of the results.
www.problogger.net - Genius
andybeard.eu - High School
www.techcrunch.com - High School
www.itswritenow.com - Elementary School
www.shoemoney.com - Elementary School (no surprise there )
www.copyblogger.com - College (Post Grad)
www.connectedinternet.co.uk - Junior High School
www.mashable.com - College (Under Grad)
www.johnchow.com - High School
www.clazh.com - Junior High School
www.emomsathome.com/blog - Junior High School
According to the readability test you have to be a genius in order to read and understand Darren Rowse’s blog. Just to make sure I check his photography and Living Room blog too. They don’t require you to be a genius to read them.
Unfortunately the test doesn’t say what it uses to calculate your sites reading level, but usually readability tests measures the length of sentences and the utility of simple words.
What is your blog’s reading score? Do you think about it when writing a post? Do you know of any blogs that requires a genius to read? Is The Beta News too easy to read?

Thanks for the linkback. I don’t think too much on my result. It obviously isn’t junior high school.
So I guess it’s a good thing that I sometimes feel the need to dumb down concepts, eh?
Oh yes, otherwise we’d have trouble keeping up with you Wendy
